Nexhmi Rexhepi has been elected President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo on 10 December 2024. He was decreed as a Judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo on 9 August 2018.
He completed his law studies in 2001, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Prishtina, and received his MA in Human Rights and Democracy from the University of Bologna and the University of Sarajevo in 2004. For study purposes he attended one semester (2002) at the Arizona State University School of Public Administration, and one semester (2009) at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, under the mentorship of Professor and Head of International Law Department, Professor Ruth Wedgewood. In addition for study and professional purposes, he also attended the Karl-Franzens Graz University, Faculty of Law, and the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law. For professional purposes, during the period of May-July 2022, he was placed at the European Court of Human Rights, as part of the program to support the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo by the Council of Europe.
President Rexhepi began his professional career at the District Court in Prishtina, and then continued as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Prishtina, Department of Criminal Law Sciences. He was also head of Legal Department at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, as well as Legal Advisor at the International Civilian Office (ICO). In the position of the head of Legal Department at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, President Rexhepi was the main carrier of the process of drafting the legislation of these two sectors, while as part of the International Civilian Office he was an active part of the working groups in drafting the package of statehood laws.
Hence, he belongs to the generation of lawyers who have been an active part of building the legal system of the Republic of Kosovo.
He is the founder of the first diplomatic mission of the Republic of Kosovo in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as well as the first Kosovo’s ambassador to this country. President Rexhepi was also member of the representative team of the Republic of Kosovo at the International Court of Justice. He also served as Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to the Republic of Slovenia.
President Rexhepi participated in many scientific and professional conferences in different countries. He was a professional associate in several law projects, author of several publications and translations, and held public lectures at several universities and institutes, including Johns Hopkins University, Utrecht University, Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, The Nieuwe of Littéraire Sociëteit De Witte in The Hague, University of Ljubljana, Center for European Perspective in Ljubljana, as well as for participants in the Hague Academy of International Law.
President Rexhepi is married to Mrs. Afërdita Rexhepi, and are parents of three children.
